What is a Fraternal Benefit Society?

Fraternal benefit societies began in the United States almost 150 years ago to offer a sense of community for a new generation of Americans. Usually founded upon common bonds-religious, ethnic, occupation, or other general interest-these fraternal organizations provided companionship for people of like culture and allowed members to learn from each other and preserve their traditions and interests, in addition to the assurance of financial support when tragedy struck. As a “general” fraternal, National Mutual Benefit offers membership regardless of nationality, religion, or employment.

Today, NMB and its fellow fraternal benefit societies in the NFCA have advanced to offer sound life insurance, annuity, and other financial products, combined with comprehensive programs to tap member volunteerism and community involvement. These organizations perform charitable, educational, patriotic, and other works for the benefit of humanity, while protecting their members, fostering fellowship and encouraging personal growth.
